The surprise slap on the back of the head release of the month is a cassette demo tape given to me personally by the guitarist of Maintenance of Order. He was also kind enough to let me crash at his apartment when the Insight 23/Christ Analogue tour passed through the tiny little agricultural town of Dekalb, Il. Much to my surprise Dekalb harbored much more than the miles of tilled fields that lined the highways leading to it. Maintenance of Order remained a hidden fixture in the town for the better part of the past few years, even with releasing two full length albums on it's own and touring. Europe. The release, albeit listed as a demo, is actually a portion of a soon to be released double length album due out by the end of 1996. It definitely doesn't sound like any demo that I've ever heard beyond the fuzzy recording quality which more the fault of my cassette player then the media it is recorded on. The music is a cohesive mixture of electronic programming, subdued guitars, and profound lyrics. Maintenance of Order capture the coldwave fusion of electronic and guitars with an unyielding edge of tension. They are not afraid to correograph a slow tempo song and then suddenly unlease the fury of their instruments halfway through the track to rile up their audience. It amazes me that a band of such paramount quality has remained so unobtrusive for such a long period of time. Aspiring labels ought to take due notice of this band before a major label snaps them up.
