I was a little bit weary of the debut Fishtank No. 9 album after hearing 'Eclipse' on the COP compilation because of it's synth-pop stylings. However, it appears that a single track was definitely not enough to compose proper judgement. True, "Itself" does have more than it's fair share of synth-pop influences, but they are not enough to overpower the other electro-industrial elements within the rest of the music. Overall the album has quite a diverse selection of tracks from slower, more introspective pieces, to noise and sample collages, and even a few upbeat dance tracks. The only real disappointment is the lack of any material that is similar to the daemonic sound Of Skin and Saliva which was War-N's previous musical endeavor. However this is made up for by the depth and quality of his lyrics and vocals which he uses without the aid of distortion or modification. Overall a very solid debut release that should turn a few heads with it's diversity and willingness to utilize elements of synth-pop in a slightly new direction.
